152nd Street widening & nicomekl Bridge Twinning
- Date: 2023-2025
- Location: Surrey, BC
- Project Type: Municipal Infrastructure
About this Project
As part of the City of Surrey’s Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF) program, this major infrastructure upgrade improves both flood protection and transportation capacity along a critical corridor between the Nicomekl and Serpentine Rivers.
The project includes the widening of approximately 2.5 kilometres of 152 Street to a four-lane arterial road, complete with new multi-use pathways, sidewalks, medians, and upgraded underground utilities. In parallel, we are twinning the Nicomekl River Bridge and completing repairs to the adjacent Serpentine River Bridge, improving vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian safety and mobility.

Key construction elements include:
-
Full-depth road reconstruction and asphalt paving
-
Installation of concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks, and multi-use pathways
-
Ditch relocation and culvert replacements
-
Wall construction, preload, grading, and electrical works
-
Erosion and sediment control and extensive landscaping
In-stream works were carried out under strict environmental oversight to enhance fish passage and restore natural habitat. This included realigning the river channel, stabilizing banks with bioengineering, removing obsolete structures, and restoring riparian vegetation.
The bridge construction involved significant technical challenges, including:
-
Installation of deep foundations and engineered crane pads
-
Night-time girder placements using dual 250-ton cranes
-
Temporary river isolation measures and fish salvage operations
-
Complex coordination with BC Hydro for safe work near live transmission lines
